Music Monday on Tuesday! “Oh Cecilia (Breaking my Heart)”- The Vamps feat. Shawn Mendes

Alright, so I have a soft spot in my heart for Simon and Garfunkel.  I really like their music.  One of my favorite songs by them is “Cecilia” and it is probably the only one of their songs that whenever it comes on the radio I will actually sing as loud as I can and dance along to it if I am not driving.  This song came out in 1970. Fast forward to 2014.  Once again the UK has decided that there are not enough of its boy bands out in the world and now we have The Vamps.  As much as I really love British artists, I am starting to think that the UK is trying to take over the world again with a new British invasion by mass producing poppy boy bands.  That being said The Vamps are actually pretty good.  I have heard several of their songs on the radio and then this popped up on my YouTube homepage today.

When I noticed that the title was “Oh Cecilia (Breaking my Heart)” I clicked on it thinking, oh they have covered my favorite Simon and Garfunkel song.  Well, sort of.  They sample the chorus.  The rest of the song is their own.  It actually works.  I was pretty pleased with it.  Not only is it as poppy and catchy as the original, the video made me laugh a bit.  Sure, it is goofy, but then again so is the whole concept of the song.  Especially the original version.

Normally I do not like covers of songs, but The Vamps pull this one off very well.  They made it their own and retained enough of the original to make it recognizable.  In fact, I played the Simon and Garfunkel version and then this one right after it and it pretty much sounded like it was a continuation of their song.  That takes some talent and they pull it off beautifully.
