The Odd Music Video Trilogy by Sia
“Chandelier” is a wonderful song and this video is so intriguing. Maddie Ziegler from the show “Dance Moms” is featured in this video. I have always thought contemporary dance was an interesting form of art in terms of dance. There are just so many things that you can do with it. While Sia herself doesn’t make an appearance in the video, she does in a way. Maddie’s character is apparently supposed to represent Sia. Some people might not catch that reference, but if you were to look at a picture of Sia you probably would. Sia has platinum hair and has a very interesting look to her in the same way that Maddie does. This video was a great start to what turned out to be an interesting video trilogy.
“Elastic Heart” was actually released before “Chandelier” as a song. It was released as a single for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. However, this video wasn’t released until two years later and boy did it end up have a firestorm of people hating it. The is quite possibly one of the most controversial videos that has been released of the decade to date. Shia LaBeouf is almost 30 while Maddie isn’t even a teenager yet and their costumes consist of a flesh coloured leotard for Maddie and Shia in a pair of flesh coloured men’s tap pants. While it is an odd video, it is an artistic representation of the two warring halves of the same person. It’s an interesting video, I’ll give it that. You just have to ignore the age gap.
Okay, I’ll admit that I’m no expert on art. I get that this video is supposed to be artistic. While I’m not an art expert, you know what I am? I’m a dancer. I have been dancing since I could walk. I’ve been taking dance lessons for over twenty years. Flailing about like you are having a seizure and rubbing your hands all over your face like a toddler isn’t dancing. That’s called being a kid. You know who’s a kid? Maddie Ziegler is a kid. I’ve been dancing longer than she’s been alive. Don’t get me wrong now. Maddie is a great dancer. I loved the video for “Chandelier” and while “Elastic Heart” was…um…interesting, they were by no means bad videos. Sia’s video for “Big Girls Cry” is just awful though. There really isn’t any art to be had in this video. It’s just Maddie flailing about more wildly than a level 5 Magikarp from Pokèmon Blue. I am a bit sad that Maddie’s talent was put to waste like that. I love this song and it’s one of my favourite songs by Sia to date.
