It’s Cheaper to Grow Your Own Organic Food and Better for You!
Despite America being one of the most overweight countries in the world, we seem to have this fascination with organic foods. By now, with its popularity, I’m sure that most everyone knows what constitutes organic food. For those of you who don’t know, organic food is food grown naturally and without the use of pesticides or insecticides. In the terms of meat products, they must not be treated with growth hormones or other forms of medication that wouldn’t be necessary to treat an illness. For today, we will focus on the fruits and vegetables that are grown organicly rather than the livestock. I have more experience with gardening than ranching.
If you’ve been to the organic section of your grocery store, or organic products in general, you will have most likely noticed that organic food costs a lot more than regular food. Why is that? The best answer that I can come up with is that it costs more to produce and certify. Food that isn’t organic is typically farmed at commercial farms that specialize in growing large amounts of food. These farms are huge and the conditions that the animals live in usually isn’t the best. Organic farms, on the other hand, are smaller and the conditions for livestock are usually much better. The reason for an organic farm being smaller is that it takes much more care and attention for these farms.
Growing your own organic fruits and vegetables is not as difficult as some people seem to think it is. We have plenty of organic fruits and vegetables that we grow in our garden. Keep in mind that the most expensive thing about growing an organic garden is the seeds. You can go and buy seeds at most stores, but the organic seeds are what you want and they are typically more expensive. If you want a good deal on organic seeds, I would recomend going to Burpee’s Online Seed Bin. There is a section of nothing but organic seeds and if you sign up for their newsletter, you can get $10 off your order! Pretty amazing if you ask me. Some of these organic seeds are also heirloom plants, I will post about those at a later time.
So, exactly how is growing your own better for you? Well, think about it. You know how those plants are grown since you are taking care of them. Also, gardening is a form of stress relief for many people. You are also putting forth an effort into doing something and literally getting to see the fruits of your labour! It is wonderful all around. Since the plants aren’t treated with anything, there isn’t a risk of ingesting odd poisonous chemicals you should be.
