Are You Sure You Actually Know What an Archangel is?
Well, this post is about the word Archangel. Why that word? It is an interesting word that is why! Let us learn about that.
The word Archangel is a word that most people think that they know what it means, but most of them turn out to not really know what it means. The word comes from the Greek words archi and angelos. Angelos is the term that is used the most when talking about the celestial hierarchy of angels. This is term that the word angel itself comes from. Quite simply it means “messenger”. This would imply that all forms of angels are messengers of some sort. That makes sense because in the Bible they are seen as bringers of God’s messages. Now on to the next part, or the first part of the word I should say. Archi is a word that most do not know unless they are Greek or have studied Greek. This word means “chief” or “ruler”. The word also is part of other words such as Archduke and Archenemy. It is quite a useful word actually.
When you put the two together you end up with the meaning of Archangel. That meaning is, “chief messenger” or “ruling messenger”. This makes perfect sense when you start thinking about it in terms of religion. Archangels are the ones that are named in the Bible. That would imply that they were important enough to at least be named individually in such an important text. When it comes to the word Archi, there is the implication that the ruler has been around for a very long time. Since the angels were created before humans it would make sense that the word Archangel can be taken to mean that they have been ruling for a very long time.
There you have it. Now you know what Archangels really are.
